Our Promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, now the world’s largest breast cancer organization and the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer with nearly $1.5 billion invested to date. For more information about Susan G. Komen for the Cure, breast health or breast cancer, visit www.komen.org or call 1-877 GO KOMEN.
The Upper Cumberland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® was founded in 2006 when a group of volunteers vowed to improve breast health in the Upper Cumberland through education and advocacy. More than $500,000 has already been raised through fund-raising events and distributed to local organizations through grants.
Impact
Through the fundraising efforts of each participant, a 5K race can have a huge impact on the movement to end breast cancer forever. You don’t need to be a fundraising expert in order to be successful- you just need to stand up to breast cancer. Participants last year raised $125,000. This year, with your help, we will reach our goal of $150,000.
Seventy-five percent of every dollar raised stays in the 14 county Upper Cumberland region to fund vital breast cancer health education, screening, and treatment programs. Twenty-five percent of every dollar is contributed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® National Award and Research Grant Program to fund ground-breaking breast cancer research.
Survivors
Survivors are the stars of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®. Breast cancer survivors who wish to be recognized will receive a complementary pink survivor cap and shirt provided by Zeta Tau Alpha, National Sponsor of the Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program. Survivors will be treated to a meal, giveaways, and recognition ceremony. All participants are invited to recognize individuals who have been touched by breast cancer with an “In Memory of” and “In Celebration of” back sign available at the race.
Teams that raise $1,000 + (not including their registration fees) get a free spot for tailgating! Spots are limited and can be purchased for $100 each. E-mail Race Director Dave Matlock at dwmat2005@yahoo.com to reserve your spot. Bring a picnic, decorate your space, and support your team.
